Review by George Norman (Cybersecurity Editor)

on 11 Aug 2010

About two months back we took a look at a Greatis Software-developed application meant to protect your system from viruses, Trojans, and other security threats. That application’s name is RegRun Security Suite Platinum (read the complete review here). Today we take a look at another Greatis Software-developed application that is somewhat related to computer security. Today we take a look at DesktopKeeper.

The DesktopKeeper application is meant to block unauthorized access to your desktop. After the application blocks your desktop, everything looks as if it is not protected. So if you walk away from your desktop and someone walks by, that person cannot tell that your desktop is locked. If that person tries to sneak a peak at your data – say click an icon – DesktopKeeper will block access to it. Furthermore, DesktopKeeper will record every key that person presses and every mouse click.

To lock your desktop all you have to do is click the DesktopKeeper icon from the system tray, then select the Lock Desktop command. If you prefer to use the keyboard not the mouse, you can lock the desktop using a hotkey. If you forget to lock your desktop, DesktopKeeper will do this automatically (auto lock when the system is idle). If you want DesktopKeeper to lock the desktop at a specific time, you can do this as well.

Before you get DesktopKeeper and put it through its paces, take a look at these technical bits and pieces:
Download – the download weighs in at close to 2MB, which means it should take very little time to get DesktopKeeper off the web and onto your computer.
Installation – installing DesktopKeeper is a simple process that goes along rapidly. According to Greatis Software, at the time of writing this, DesktopKeeper provides support for Windows 95, 98, Me, NT4, 2000, XP.
Limitations – DesktopKeeper is free to try. This means you can use the application free of charge only for a trial period of 30 days.

Pros

  • Password protected
  • Hotkeys
  • Auto lock when system is idle
  • Lock desktop at a specific time

Cons

  • Free to try (30-day trial)
